In the latest of a regular series, we check in with leading hoteliers and general managers to get an exclusive glimpse into their careers, their lives and their ambitions. This time, we speak to Botho Stein, general manager at The May Fair, A Radisson Collection Hotel.

    I enjoy my job because…

Of my team. Two front office managers and a sales director becoming general managers across the group was a proud moment. Being able to contribute to our luxurious neighbourhood, through our deep-rooted partnerships, is exciting too. Last year, as the official hotel of London Fashion Week, we worked with British designer Osman to create a striking window installation and bespoke cocktails.

I find my job challenging because…

The industry is rapidly evolving, requiring me to be continuously ahead of the curve. The group is deeply committed to training across all levels to ensure we offer long term career options with practical training. My career has progressed through studying the executive programme at Saïd Business School, Oxford University, and at Imperial College Business School, which Edwardian Hotels London has a ten year partnership with.

My best achievement in business was…

After a 20-year hospitality career, becoming a general manager at The May Fair, A Radisson Collection Hotel, a luxury icon in the heart of Mayfair, was a career milestone having started my career as an apprentice in 2003.

If I could change one thing about the industry, it would be…

Sustainability. Positive change is already in motion, and we recognise the journey to becoming an industry ambassador is a long one, to which we are deeply committed. We are delighted all our properties were certified Gold Standard by Green Tourism, and we’ve reduced general waste by 20 per cent.

My worst mistake in business was…

    All mistakes are learnings!

What I am yet to accomplish is…

To use my experience and skills to work on future large scale projects for Edwardian Hotels London.

If I could change one thing about myself, it would be…

The ability to switch off completely.

My top three bucket list items are…

    1. Visiting New Zealand with my family; 2. Heli-skiing in Canada; 3. Complete a marathon (one day!)

    My life philosophy is…

You can be successful in whatever you do.

My favourite song, book or film is…

My favourite read was 700 letters exchanged between my grandparents during the Second World War.

    My ideal weekend would be…

Jumping in the car with the family and end up somewhere I have not been before.
